I want to visit south-africa this summer with my 10-year old son. I would like to hear experiences from travellers who also have visit this country with teen-kids. Did they like the trip? What to do / don't do ?
I wish I went sooner. If you're from "the west", like myself it's a great window into Africa, being that it's somewhat safe, somewhat modern, yet every bit Africa! It'll really open yours as well as your sons eyes. I think all kids from this side of the ocean should be shipped off there at about that age, myself included(Im only 23), so we can appreciate the excess we have.
I'd definitely say "do" the little things that scream what Africa used to be, and "don't" leave anything unplanned-like any trip know where you're going, and exactly what you are doing just to be safe.
I can throughly recommend South Africa - didn't go with teens (does the wife count?) but think there is plenty for all. We started off in Cape Town, drove across the Garden Route (they may get bored here) and flew upto Gomo Gomo (Timbavati game reserve) and finished off in Sun City. Definately worth a look!
As the father of two girls - aged 15 and 9 - living in SA for the past 2+ years I can only say "go and go soon". As a family we have truly had one of the great experiences of our lives living there and I can't say too much about the people, the culture and the country itself (which is always beautiful and at times stunning - Cape Town, the beaches and Kruger and the other parks to give highlights). My girls have had any number of great experiences - from game viewing, to walking on Robben Island, to visiting Soweto. One final point - there is no doubt hat crime is very bad in parts (esp. Jo'burg) and common sense and care is definately needed -but please don't let that stop you seeing one of the great countries on earth.
Do it!
