Smithsonian: 28 Places to see Before You die

Looks like there's a lot of these 'places to see before you die' things going around. This one is certainly better than the NY Times List: Smithsonian Magazine (http://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/lifelist.html)

– Mesa Verde
– Pompeii
– Tikal
– Petra
– Pyramids of Giza
– Taj Mahal
– Easter Island
– The Great Wall
– Aurora Borealis
– Serengeti
– Iguazu Falls
– Machu Picchu
– The Louvre
– Zen Garden of Kyoto
– Uffizi Gallery
– Fallingwater
– Yangtze River
– Antarctica
– Mount Kilimanjaro
– Grand Canyon
– Pagan
– Parthenon
– Angkor Wat
– Ephesus
– Venice
– Amazon Rain Forest
– Great Barrier Reef
– Galápagos Islands

Done 9 of these... quite a long way to go! But it seems quite a good list to be going on with...

To see before you die....

I am a sucker for lists, so I tend to buy a lot of these books....

I have done all but two of them: Mesa Verde and Fallingwater. I haven't actually climbed Kilimajaro, but I have seen it from a distance.

26 to go!

Have 26 to go! I've never really been motivated by "must go" places but of the two places on that list I have been to, the ruins of Angkor I would endorse unreservedly. The Yangtze River I would slap on a caveat emptor. Particularly if you intend to take a cruise down the river. Be warned mass tourism Chinese style is not everyone's cup of tea. I for one couldn't get off the boat fast enough!

I might be tempted to include the Potala Palace in one of these lists.

Angkor Wat

Tongue out Agree about Angkor Wat, but mass tourism has really hit it bad. Was there mid Jan 2008. Now use pic as wallpaper on computer.

I've been luck enough to

I've been luck enough to have seen a few of these places from taking mediterranean cruises to traveling europe. There's still plenty i need to see and there is a book on some of the best parties and festivals to go to in europe which is a good read and the festivals are great.
