Pench Tiger Reserve - Mowgli Land

Mowgli the wolf child was discovered by Lt.Moor in a village near Pench tiger reserve at Seoni Hills In the Central Indian State of Madhya Pradesh. Seoni hills and its amazing wildlife is best described by Capt Forsyth in his book the "Highland of Central India". Kipling too has given a fantasy account of wildlife of Seoni Hills in his book "Jungle BooK" based on Mowgli the wolf child.
Pench tiger reserve is the remainent of olden day forests of Seoni Hills and Central Indian Highlands. The wolf is still here and so is Sher Khan the tiger. Wildlife at Pench is as enchanting as described in the books above.

The main mammalian species seen are bison or gaur, spotted deer or chital, sambar, langur monkeys, jackal, tiger, leopard and on rare occasions the wolf and sloth bear. Small der like the barking deer, chuasingha or four horned deer and chinkara the Indian gazelle are also seen in the park.

The park is rich in bird life though no survey has been carried out so far but like Kanha and Bandhavgarh the park should contain more than two hunders and fifty bird species. Indian reptiles like python and cobra are seen on occassions but other reptiles are nocturnal and difficult to sight. Civets, mongoose and ratel can be seen in the night rounds at the periphery of the park.

The forest of Pench National Park are tropical dry deciduous mixed type and floral diversity is amazing. Teak, Bamboo and Saaj are the dominent species in the forested zones where as grasslands abound with themeda and sacchrum spp.

The park opens in October and closes on June 31st every year. There are lost of hotels at Pench and they cater to all types of tourists from budget to luxury traveler. The accommodation should be booked in advance in the peak season in winters as the park recieves lots of visitors during that period.

Pench is accessible from Nagpur which has flight service from Delhi and Bombay. It is also accessible from Jabalpur which is a rail head and has flight service connecting New Delhi.
