Just returned from a rather eventful trip to Morocco. Of course, what's the cheapest way to get there? Via Spain, of course, particularly via one of those flight-only deals on the charter airlines from Gatwick. All fine on the way out... took the ferry from Algeciras to Ceuta (OK, technically Spain, but there we go). Only problem was on the way back. Had to be rescued by the Red Cross (well, they gave us food parcels and nice red blankets to sleep in when in the ferry terminal).
Moral of the story is it's a great way to get in to Africa... but explaining it to your charter hotel when you arrive back late to check out can be a bit tricky...
Caribbean
Ha ha ha...well at least you have a story to tell...
For info, I think it's pretty easy to get a ferry to Tangiers from Spain/Gibraltar. Although the red cross are unlikely to be waiting to help you in Tangiers!!
On the subject of charter flights, has anyone ever tried to get around the Caribbean cheaply by getting there on a charter flight (or by flying to Florida) then using ferries to get between the islands? I can't find much about ferry timetables on the web but I'm sure it must be possible...
Getting back to Spain
A few (well, several) years back we went to S Spain for 2 weeks, and in the 2nd week took the ferry to Tangier, bussed around and ended up in Ceuta. Turned up at the terminal, but bad weather had stopped the ferries. We went with an old guy who had a sign offering rooms, walked a long way, and eventually got a bed for the night. Back to the terminal, and ferries were sailing, tho' still rough. At least we got back to Spain for our return flight, but only just made it. Moral - if you're trying Morocco this way, allow a couple of spare days at the end for weather.
