Is Greenland part of the European or American continent?

Is Greenland part of the European continent? If so why do maps of Europe never show even a tiny part of Greenland - they always end with Iceland in the furthest top left corner?

greenland is ethnically and geographically a part of north america
politcally it is more a part of europe
Maps are usally not made by political areas
