From August 1, 2008, the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is accessible via Internet for citizens and eligible nationals of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries to apply for advance authorization to
travel to the United States under the VWP.
ESTA is initially available in English only. Other languages will follow. Effective January 12, 2009, all VWP travelers will be required to obtain an electronic travel authorization prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the U.S. under the VWP.
I went looking for this as Ive been told I need to do this myself before I travel to the US next April, How do I go about doing this and is there a cost ? Please help and advise.

It is free (currently - the regulations allow for a fee to be charged), and you do it online at the ESTA website. You should register at least 3 days before your flight to USA departs. If you haven't been approved by the time you check in, you will not be allowed to fly without a visa.
