Getting around Australia

Advice needed!

I'm planning a trip to Australia soon - I'm starting in Melbourne then drive along the coast up to Cairns. I only have three weeks to do this - am I being too optimistic? While I don't want to rush it, I have previously been to Sydney, so am not planning on spending too much time there. I can only take that amount of time off work, and would like to see as much as possible (including the Whitsundays and Fraser Island, not to mention time spent in Cairns, Melbourne and visiting the Great Barrier Reef).

Thanks!
Michelle.

I think it's a bit

I think it's a bit optimistic if you really want to see any of the places you mention. The Whitsundays needs 3/4 days to really appreciate it and get into the whole 'living on a yacht social lifestyle'...longer if you plan to dive. Fraser Island is normally a 3 day trip to make the most of it, Melbourne is a great city and well worth a few days...and venture out to some of the Great Ocean Road if you can. There are loads of great places to stop on the East Coast but you'll only touch the surface in 3 weeks - if you want to focus on the highlights I'd suggest flying - Virgin Blue have some great cheap deals on www.virginblue.com

Greyhound

When I went up the coast (albeit a couple of years ago), there was a Greyhound ticket where you could get on and off the buses, as long as you kept going north. Avoid getting stuck somewhere like Bundaberg, which I thought was miserable. Some of the surfing towns are great though. And don't underestimate Cairns... snorkelling on the Barrier Reef was the highlight of my trip...

Getting Around Australia

I agree with previous comments. I live in OZ and it is way too big to do that drive in 3 weeks. I think you would get really sick of the driving. Virgin Blue as well as Jetstar have great deals and it would allow you to enjoy so much more time at your highlight places.
