Excuse me if this one's been done before, but I'm a newbie. I read an article in a magazine once that claimed Melbourne and Sidney "must feature in everyone's top ten cities," and was moved to write my own list in reply (I haven't been to Melbourne, and Sidney's nowhere near my top ten). My letter wasn't published, and I don't have a copy, and of course there are loads of fascinating cities in the world. But off the top of my head I would include London, Florence, Paris ,Venice, Jerusalem, Luxor, New York, Cuzco ... Next week I'd probably come up with a different set, but if it's not been done to death already, it would be interesting to see some other suggestions.
I would have to say that
I would have to say that Glasgow, Barcelona and Rhodes Town would so far compile my list of favourite cities.
Glasgow for the obvious reason that i live there and the fact that im a die hard celtic fan.
Rhodes Town because of the culture and atmosphere you can experience.
Barcelona for many reasons: I have great memories of a recent trip there with my school
The architecture (la Sagrada Familia)
Las Ramblas
And the atmosphere.
The architecture in Glasgow is also incredible especially buildings designed by Alexander "Greek" Thomson.
It's so hard to pick only a
It's so hard to pick only a few cities, but here's what I consider my top five at the moment!
1: Kazan, Russia (Tatarstan).
Everyone should go to Kazan. It's a beautiful city with the most amazing Kreml. It's an exotic mix of religions and cultures. And the mix of people and languages makes it even more special..
2: San Francisco, USA
3: Lviv, Ukraine
4: Edinburgh, Scotland
5: Volgograd, Russia
LONDON!!
It's hard to narrow it down to a few as so many places have been special even if it just be for one particluar reason/site!
In no order as it would be too hard to choose...
Beijing - the amazing, jaw dropping sites, sounds, smells and wonderful food
Sydney - The harbour, the ferries, the walks - it has everything.
Lijiang (Yunnan Province) - the old town was ever so beautiful when I went. Stunning!
Luang Prabang - quaint and heavenly, no more needs to be said!
Ljubljana - OK, this is a cheat because I haven't been yet, but I'll be off there in a few weeks time and I already know I am gonna love it!!!
London - history, museums, galleries, numerous wonderful parks, tacky tourist sites, river trips, markets, clubs, non- smoking pubs/bars ...all this makes for a wonderful holiday (if thats your thing of course).
Best cities, both to visit and to live
Barcelona, hands down, is by far the best place I have been or lived - this is not because I am Spanish, I didnt even grow up in Spain...but Barcelona is magic
Runners up include:
San fransico - for a visit only, not to live in
New Orleans- another magic place
Nice - great for visit, but the outlying villages are even better
Pargue- great beer, fun people
Cuzco- Peru is magic
Sydney- Vibrant nightlife...great place to live
New York
Dubrovnik- however, please note that I was there BEFORE the war, not sure the condition nowdays
worst cities:::
Manila
Auckland
LA
Cairo
Jakarta
Kuala lumpur
Dresden
Europe for sure.......
Cripes this is a tough one. Been to so many great cities, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Florence, Palma, New York, San Francisco, Vancouver, Nice to name but a few. Ultimately I would have to plump for London. You think of anything you would want from a city and London has it in abundance.
Kazan etc
1. Kaz\n -agree
2 San Fransisco- not been
3. Edinburgh - of course !!!
4. Well, pathetic compared to SPB
Many...
There are many towns in the world I enjoyedm but I will try to make a short list...
1. Amsterdam. This town is amazing! I'm Dutch, so I might be prejudiced, but I just love the extravagance of the capital of the Netherlands! You can feel the tolerance everywhere: weird people in the streets, the red light district, the 'coffeeshops', its somehow strange architecture... what I like about this town is that it hasnt really been restyled in the 19th century, the way many other European capitals were. Plus, there are great museums, beautiful people... and again the tolerance.
2. Barcelona. What can I say? This town is always moving, it's as if the people don't sleep... which is a good thing, in my opinion. The atmosphere is great! Smiling people, this typical Spanish vibe, the mediteranean climate... I just love it.
3. Cairo. This town is just sooo huge! There are so many different people, cultures and religions, you just have to love it! In some ways it's a typical African town: it's messy, for exmaple. but it's kind of an organized chaos, which is funny to see. I recommend anyone to visit this town!
4. Salamanca (Spain). My mother said about this, rather unknwon, city "There's no town like Rome... but this one comes close. It's not big, but everything's just right about it." And she's right. The renaissance architecture is beautiful, the colours are nice, the people are warm, the food is amazing... An unexpected beauty!
5. Paris. I just had to pick this one. Paris is so.. Paris! Many other cities were copied after this one, but it's quite visible that PAris was 'first'. There's something about this town that keeps me moving, that makes me want to discover... What can I say? One of my favourites.
New Orleans
I'd have to say New Orleans is my favorite city - so much to see and do if you move beyond Bourbon Street. Not that Bourbon Street isn't fun! The French & Spanish influences on the architecture and culture, Mardi Gras and JazzFest, the antebellum plantations, the Mississippi River and all it's lore, the Voodoo mysticism, the music and the FOOD - I've never been anywhere else like it.
I love going to greece i
I love going to greece i have family there and an apartment so its cheap to go shopping is awesome in athens and piraeus, i found some shops on the shoe directory that had some nice shows
Favourite Cities
I have three favourite cities for three reasons. They are:-
1. London - for atmosphere
2. London - for atmosphere
3. London - for atmosphere
Best Cities
Best city for a city, Toronto, ON Canada
Even its worst bits seemed forward thinking, and above all worked. Although there are not thousands of attractions, its well worth a visit.
Best city for history, Luxor, Egypt and Rome, Italy
Luxor is a place in which you cannot you 100m without becoming knee-deep in history, so much to see and do. Its a similar story in Rome, with cultural treasures and historical surprises round every corner.
Best city for culture, Aswan, Egypt and Barcelona, Spain
Aswan was like Luxor really, but with the tourist trap element removed, the culture shone through. Spice markets in particular are definately worth a visit. Barcelona, on the other hand, was notable for being so different, but at the same time remaining so European- not only art enthusiasts (which I am not) should come here.
Best city for landscape, Reykjavik, Iceland, Grand Canyon, AZ USA and Albuquerque, NM USA
Reykjavik, and Iceland as a whole, is such a beautiful place it iis hard to express in words. As I went in April, snow was thick on the group and capped the graceful mountains which seemed to rise straight from the clear sea. Grand Canyon, to be cliched, was awesome, but the beauty of the desert does not stop there- New Mexico is, in its own ways, just as impressive.
Worst cities:
Flagstaff, AZ USA:
Such a bland city for a regional hub: a sign for "Flagstaff historic district" took us out of the town
Naples, Italy:
A dirty version of Rome with much less to see and beggars and stray dogs everwhere. Also the driving is crazy: a motorcyclist crossed a traffic island we were on to go the wrong way down a one-way street.
Ryde, Isle of Wight, UK
What is the point in this town? We went to here by hovercraft from Portsmouth because it advertised a castle, which turned out to be a closed inn/restaurant. There was nothing else in the city- it seemed to be an independant suburb.
New York, NY, USA
Complete and utter let down. Nowhere near worth the hype around it.
Favourite City
Buenos Aires in Arentina and Lisbon in Portugal are both fantastic cities with a brilliant atmosphere.
I don't really like cities but...
...I would say the 2 most interesting cities for me were:
Jerusalem for the old history
Berlin for the modern history.
When I think of cities I assume at least a million people, which is too many people in one place for my liking, but I would rate Sydney because it's 3M+ but it probably has the best natural setting of any large city in the world - the harbour, the beaches, ringed by a great coastline and 3 national parks (Royal, Blue Mountains & Kuringai) - within 1 hour of anywhere in Sydney you can be at a beach or in the bush.
I'd rate Cape Town too for similar reasons, and also San Francisco - good harbours do wonders for a place.
Favourite Cities
In a top 5 order:
1. Berlin. The atmosphere and the Christmas markets make this worthwhile alone, and the modern history from the Soviet era is good.
2. London. Anything you want to find you can find in London.
3. Cologne. A fantastic Christmas experience for anyone not going to Berlin. The cathedral is excellent.
4. Moscow. Fond of this city even though I've never been. The Kremlin is somewhere I want to go one day.
5. Jerusalem. Ancient history in a modern and diverse city. It's interesting at the least.
Favourite Cities
I like Cadiz, Torremolinos, Rota. Anything Spain I love. Luxembourg City, Phoenix, Baltimore, Brussels, Dortmund, Cologne, about Paris I highly encourage everyone to go to the Louvre even if you dont see anything else. That Place is magnificent. Simply out of this world. A couple of people have told me that they dont like art, paintings but there's so much more.
