Just thought I'd start a chat on the best country in the world. For me, it's New Zealand, hands down.. especially the south Island. The glaciers, Milford Sound, Queenstown, the sheep, everything... in my experience, you can't beat it. Although I've got a lot of the world to see!
Anyone got any other recommendations for my next trip(s)..?
France
Personally, i enjoyed france the most, so diverse and interesting. I think they have it all...
I think bali had some amazing people and things to see, and they love to laugh.
Peru
Peru wins my vote - I had wanted to go for ages, and when I finally visited, it totally lived up to my expectations...Machu Picchu was awe-inspiring, but so were all the other places - La Huacachina (great for sandboarding), Huanchaco (great place to try ceviche) and Nazca were all highlights, as were the three days spent camping on a remote beach in Northern Peru.
Never been to New Zealand but so many people rave about it that it's definitely "on the list"...
Oooh, I agree with Kate, New
Oooh, I agree with Kate, New Zealand wins hands down - it has absolutely everything. South America's next for me though - I've randomly wanted to visit Uruguay for quite a while. Not sure it's going to be as spectacular as NZ, but we'll see.
peru
totally agree just been to peru with partner katie started in lima loved plaza de armas and miraflores then onto cusco took a day to acclimatise but ok very touristy great cathedral and inca walls fantastic journey to macchu picchu awesome place we loved aguas calientes jumble of a town on urubamba river with rainforests ollantaytambo historic good market lovely bar in evening when no tourists about only locals and llamas train to puno on andean explorer excellent service great scnery mountaina and altiplano onto market city of juliaca and finally puno city on edge of stunning lake titicaca recommended hydrofoil to bolivia via beautiful sun and moon islands and meeting of the uros indians excellent trip
Hi, This question has
Hi,
This question has several problems;
Firstly few people have been to every country and are therefore qualified to judge which country is the 'best.'
Secondly best is subjective - I thought Australia was the most disappointing place I've ever been, most people seem to love it.
Thirdly best at what cricket, boozing, gratuitously invading smaller countries. Or do we mean best scenary, cities or man made wonders?
My list would go.
Best at Cricket - Australia.
Best at boozing - Australia.
Best at gratuoitously invading smaller countries - USA.
Best Sceenary - Nepal.
Best Cities - USA.
Best Man Made Wonders - India.
Joint Best OVERALL - Sri Lanka, Jordan, Morroco and Peru.

Best Country
It all depends on what you are looking for and the experience you have:
Scenery
History
Wildlife
Culture
Short break
ETC ETC
Three of my favourites are Chile(scenery), Nambia(wildlife)and the Ice Hotel in Sweden (the sheer experience).
There isn't a country I haven't liked and I love travelling, but I also love comming home as well.
Hi Travelbug, Totally agree,
Hi Travelbug,
Totally agree, travel is about widening horizons there is good and not so good everywhere; I also think that your comment about coming home is very true, as for me home, Luton, is probably the best place in the whole world familly, friends, familiarity etc...
Steve
I vote for Namibia
For people who love Africa, Namibia is the perfect country. Organised and clean and yet wild as wild can be. The divesity of stunning landscapes is amazing, from the deep gorges of Fish River canyon to the highest dunes in the planet in the Namib desert, to Damaraland, the land of rocks, the endemic flora and fauna, the barren skeleton coast and the lush vegetation in the Caprivi and its big rivers, the people from different tribes like the Herero, the Himba, the San. Conservation is a matter taken very seriously by everyone in Namibia, an example to be followed!
Botswana for "being on your
Botswana for "being on your own" in nature,
Thailand for Asian culture, Italy for Euro culture and food,
Venezuela for amazingly beautiful women and Dubai for the most recent economic miracle
Italy and Turkey
Food: Italy 10, Turkey 9
History: from oldest organized city in Catal Huyuk to the glory of Renaissance and Baroque via Ancient Rome, the Bizantines and the Ottomans, any doubts? 10 to both countries
Archeology: Cerveteri, Rome, Pompei, Sicily, Hattusas, Ephesos, Aphrosisias, Nemrut Dag. 10 to both
Culture: Italy 10, Turkey 9
Natural diversity: from Alps and Black See Range to Sicily and Mesopotamia, 9 to both
Cities: Rome, Venice, Istanbul (the only city on 2 continents!) 10 to both
People hospitality: Italy 8 (use to be better), Turkey 10
Final comment: Italy wins but not so easily
Mauritania, oddly
Following on from my ramblings on the 'worst country' thread, I was reminded of my trip across Mauritania with a member of the Guinean judo team. You know the sort of thing, you share a taxi with someone, get talking, and find out that the person you would otherwise ignore is in fact fascinating.
So I reckon it's all down to the people you meet and the experiences you have...
Ireland
I can't think of anyplace I've traveled that hasn't been interesting, fun and at least educational. That being said, so far my vote would be Ireland. Yes, it was expensive, but the people were wonderful and very proud of their heritage. Everyone we encountered had recommendations for things to see and do. I don't drink much, but the pub scene was still great for the interactions and the music. The scenery was varied and often breathtaking. I have to concur with a previous post - it all comes down to the people.
Best Country In the World
Been to too many to narrow it down to one ... but unlike most people, I was not too impressed by New Zealand! And you can see my worst thread about Morocco!! Wasn't too impressed with SA either when I was dragged off my bike at gunpoint but was very quickly impressed how the number of people came to my rescue, so SA doesn't go down based on that one time where my life has been under threat.
But the best ...
Best memory/memories (island-hopping from West Timor across the Nusa Tenggara to Bali - I would recommend anyone to do this - but I don't know how it has changed since 1996?)
Best scenery (Algerian Sahara; Wadi Rum, Jordan; Bungle Bungles, Australia)
Best cities etc. (Antigua, Guatemala; Inhassoro, Mozambique; what's left of Old Lhasa, Tibet - not China; Udaipur, India; Granada, Nicaragua)
Best beaches (Bottle Beach, Koh Phan Ngan; Tulum Beach, Mexico)
Best trek (South-West trek, Tasmania)
Best wildlife (not seeing a tiger in India - makes me very excited not seeing something like this, but what I saw ... seeing a hippo give birth from 2m away in the Kruger, SA)
Best hangouts (Lake Manijau, Sumatra; Chimimani Mountains, Zimbabwe; Luang Prabang, Laos; Dali, China; Olympus, Turkey)
Most Impressive Buildings (Angkor Wat, Cambodia; Macchu Picchu - seen coming through the Sun Gate; Temples of Abu Simbel, Egypt)
Best natural sight (Vic Falls, Zimbabwe & Zambia)
Best Diving (Sulawesi, Indonesia)
Best festivals (Running of the Bulls, Pamplona, Spain)
And I've probably forgot a lot of other stuff?? Can't think of any other bests, though, but suffice it to say, I have had many, many positive travelling experiences.
JB
Best country in the world
For me it's Mexico - so much history, an amazing capital and coastline, and if you know which parts to go to, no tourists! Not forgetting the amazing people - a customs officer on my way home actually apologised because I broke my ankle in her country. I had to go home on crutches but despite this I still love that country.
Dubai (UAE)
Why - Because its just so over the top in Dubai, then when you go to Sharjah its so different just love it and you feel very safe (is that go or a bad thing?)
Also Oman is just fantastic so different and yet so friendly.
response to "peru"
!.,,,,.,..!..,,.! ...and breath
Best country - Uganda
No question - it's got the lot.
All the safari animals of East Africa, plus Mountain Gorillas - worth the visit alone.
Further north, the Nile and Murchison falls, where this mighty river passes through a gap a few metres across. The boat ride to the base of the falls takes in Hippos and crocs, as well as the animals of the savannah. I've got a photo with hippos, crocs, giraffes, elephants and antelope in! You can also drive up to the top of the falls - we were the only ones there - anywhere else and you'd had had a McDonalds!
Back south to the source of the Nile, where extreme sports such as white water rafting, quad biking and bungee jumping happen.
And the beers cheap too!
Netherlands
The best country in the world to visit is the Netherlands. Beautiful countryside, interesting culture, friendly people....and then there's Amsterdam which has everything you want in a city. The United Arab Emirates is a close second
New Zealand v. The Rest Of The World!
I fall firmly into the I Love NZ category and agree with everything said on here by the other people in the same fanclub.
The reason I have found for some people NOT being so taken with it is to do with its Britishness. For me, the fact it all feels so comfortably familiar to Britain is a real plus - I love that a Brit can be as far from home as possible, but seemingly be so close! Those who have been and weren't that taken with it had entirely the opposite view: they travel to experience something completely different.
It does beg the question: why do you travel?
As such Im going to post it as a new thread.
I liked Nepal and Canada the
I liked Nepal and Canada the most
Colombia
Variety from San Agustin to Cartagena, Bogota to Leticia. Colombia has an amazing number of magical places from ruins to Andean peaks to beaches to colonial cities to the Amazon to deserts. The people are warm and know how to party and the women hot. Festivals -Carnival in Baranquilla, Feria de Cali and Manizales, Blancos y Negroes in Pasto......... endless dancing and debauchery.
I love India, Indonesia and Tanzania aswell but Colombia is addictive.
Best
Best country
The only place I have ever arrived with a smile on my face was The Maldives
The best scenary has to be Nepal. Pohkara at dawn.
Whitest sandy beach i've been on Maldives, best beach to look at Porthcurno beach Cornwall. Best tropical beach Nan nan u ira - Fiji. Most dramatic island - Bora Bora(jaw droppingly beautiful)
Most interesting country ive been to - Myanmar.
Most frustrating - India(ofcourse)
Best mini break - Beirut Lebanon. No one goes there - I had it all to myself.
Best experience - Diving with Great Whites off South Africa(in a cage -stupid)
Worst place i've been - Macau
Remotest place to get to The Bijagos Island off Guinea Bissau (Watch out for Green mambas when camping on the beach)
Happiest time - Living rough on Tioman South China sea.
Best place to party - Sydney Australia
Places I want to go - Antartic and Torre del Paines Nat Park (Chile).
Greenland and Brazil. Easter island and Galapagos.
New Zealand is a dream!
I spent two years in NZ and didnt have a single really negative experience. The people are very friendly and straight talkers, the countryside is stunning and really varied, the pubs ( esp in South Island) have character and some of the local beers are pretty decent. Id have to say that it is my favourite country in the world by a mile. There isnt a city in the world to beat Wellington on a sunny ( and hopefully not too windy) day... ( though Sydney comes close)
United Kingdom - England
Well I don't care if you say I'm biased because I just happen to come from the best country in the world... but I'm sorry... the UK is blatantly the best! For a start it has seasons (wooo), class cities and towns as well as beautiful smaller villages, It has lovely landscapes, as well as all those brilliant things that you only get in Britain (IE: Marmite, The Queen, Tony Blair, Routemaster Buses and ME!) It really is the best!
PS. Ireland and Germany are very close runners-up!
Island hopping
I was there, in Bali lombok etc , the 1st time 1993 and loved it, but when I returned, on my way to flres, I just felt a lot of agression of a army of lieing touts that parasite on tourists and make your journey a hell.
You do nothave a chance to meet some Normal people because this guys (99%) always are in between.
Muslim radicalism has put a toll on the cristian minorities as in Flores. Open your eyes, and you will see
USA
I find the US the most deverse country, IF you consider the variety of is natural scenery.
You have a lot of national, regional and state parks where nature is well preserved, very accesible ,but at the same time remote. I still am bewilded by the scene in death valley and telescope peak, where from you see the deepest valley and highest peak of the US (ex alaska), great yellowstone, the appalaches, ozarks everglades Utah......name it.
The cities? baah. Except NYC wich is still on my top 3 city list.
Brazil for all its hospitality
Brazilians take hospitality to a whole different level. Rio de Janeiro has probably the most amazing urban-nature landscape in the World, São Paulo probably has the best restaurants of all kinds of food in the World (did you know it has the largest Italian, Japanese and Lebanese communities in the World), Bahia, Natal and Fernando de Noronha.... ahhh just so relaxing... beuatiful beaches, warm water, fantastic weather all year round..., Manaus and The Amazon, do I really have to say how amazing this place is? not to forget the Southern parts like Iguassu Falls (one of the largest in the World) or Florianopolis, yes hard to spell but it does feel like a piece of paradise.... and this will all be packaged with dozens of smiles and kindness.... well... but if you like snow... fly somewhere else!
Austrailia, Thailand or the Netherlands
As many have said this question answered many ways, so here's a different approach.
If I couldn't live in the UK, which I still reckon is the best place in the world, then there are three countries I be happy to live in permanently: Austrailia, Thailand or the Netherlands. I had a conversation about this probably 10 years ago and said this. Since then I've been to all three at least once more, and many other countries and I still reckon these three have the best combination of way of life, culture, scenery, friendliness and spirit.

Best to visit or to live?
I agree with New Zealand as being all around the best. Been there twice and loved it, especially the natural beauty of the South Island, and if I were to move to another country I would pick New Zealand.
BUT.... it was not the most interesting place. For that I would have to pick Burma (Myanmar) and Kenya. Burma is probably the most uncomfortable place I have visited but was like a trip back in time, which I loved. Kenya for the animals, the people, and Lamu.
Papua New Guinea
For an undiscovered tropical wilderness that hasn't discovered capitalism yet, this place cant be beat!
Best Countries in different ways
Yup, NZ has it for scenery, hands down - what a variety in such a small country. But for historical interest, I'd go for Egypt - fantastic buildings, and a well-established tourist route (Cairo, Nile cruise, Lake Nasser too if you can manage it). The people are genuinely friendly if you make even a little effort to talk to them - discounting the extremist areas where you have to go in an armed convoy. And because it's such a popular destination (downside, too many visitors!) you can get really good bargains.
Cyprus
I'm not really very experienced in many countries (yet!) but i would have to say that after all of the countries i have been to, Cyprus tops the lot!
The most friendly, helpful and generous people I've met.
The best sunset by a country mile. (Polis - North coast)
The best local food and drink.
And still one of the few (if not the only) places in the world where you can Ski and swim in the sea/sunbathe in the same day!
The cultural aspects are also incredible. The Cypriots have had many influences down the years:
- British
- Ottoman
- Roman
- Byzantine
- Venetian
Just to mention a few.
The lovely weather is also a huge plus.
This is why I think Cyprus is the Best country in the world!!! (well, not counting Scotland of course!!)
"British" New Zealand
Yes, it is very familiar to Brits. We flew in to Christchurch, and walking over a bridge in the park saw a family in a punt floating beneath us eating a picnic and listening to a wind-up gramophone - picturebook England, but 50 years ago or more! And Dunedin could be in Scotland. But that isn't the reason I liked it so much. It was the sheer variety of scenery for me - mountains and lakes, glaciers, temperate rain-forest, the fjord landscape of Milford Sound, the boiling mud and sulphur of Rotorua... And the absence of traffic on country roads helped.
Best Country in the world
Hi,
I agree with Steve, very few people (if anyone) has visited every country in the World. So with this in mind I would say the best country I have visited is
For the touristy experience is the Maldives,
Golden Beaches, Lovely food, plenty of things to do that you might not get a chance to do at home or a chance to sit back and relax. Seems to cater for all cultures (speaking from my observations only as I can only say this as an Englishman)
For the Local experience
Either Austria or China, Both these when travelling around I got the feeling I was seeing the country and not the made up touristy experience and received an idea of how people lived in that area of that country
Netbug
France
General consensus seems to be NZ, I for one have yet to visit but do intend to but even after I am sure my favourite will remain unchanged. I have been fortunate enough to have lived in quite a few of the countries I have visited on my travels and outside of my birth place (UK) spent the most time in France.
For me France has it all, and that's most certainly a bold statement coming from an English chap! Hard to know where to begin in my praise for this truly wonderful country. If you were only to visit Paris I defy anyone to see a more wondorous site, the people, the food and the most amazing architecture in the world. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. France is such a diverse nation from north to south, east to west. So rich in culture and a true sense of being, a proud nation and rightly so.
I remember many an afternoon outside the Carlton in Cannes sipping on a nice glass of Sancerre and sampling the foie gras, gazing over the Med as the most beautiful women in the world strolled by (don't tell my ex), ahh, c'est la vie.
China, Laos, Nepal!
Nepal - for the breathtaking Himlayas
China - for just about everything about the country
Laos - for the wonderful relaxed towns and even nicer people
I went to NZ and was fairly disappointed, my problem is I listen to the hype and expect amazing, mind blowing things. I was forgetting that everyone's perception of things is different...I hated Dunedin and yet everyone (Kiwis) had bigged it up! Loved Christchurch but the many Kiwis I know hate it - everyone's tastes are so different (thankfully)!
I look forward to Bhutan next year, thats my #1 country to visit...now all i have to do is keep that hype in check...:)
OH, Sorry was just meant to mention one country!!!!
Bet Country in the world
I notice New Zealand features very prominently in this forum. I agree that NZ is a beautiful country and a must for everybody to visit. Mountains, Lakes, Fiords, Beaches, Bush (Forest, Jungle) walks,Whale Watching, Sub-tropical climate in the North, Geysers and other volcanic activity etc. etc. Something for everybody. However there is no history in the country. The oldest building is less than 200 years old so history lovers miss out. But - still well worth a visit. The people are very freindly albeit a little crazy. Extreme sports are common and readily available to everybody. Bungee jumping, parachuting, jet boating and any other ridiculous pastimes are the norm. I did a bungee jump on my 65th birthday. DO NOT MISS NEW ZEALAND.
However as far as the best country - I have not visited very many but the small countries in Europe all impressed me and I could not choose between Andorra, Leichtenstein or San Marino for my choice. What do others think about these gorgeous little places. A very interesting forum.
Once again NZ is definely worth a visit.
Ukraine/ Russia
I know it might not be the easiest countries to travel in, but I had a truly fantastic time in both Russia and Ukraine. I felt like we were the only western tourists there. I have to admit that Moscow was my least favorit part of Russia. But the cities of Kazan, Ekaterinburg, Ufa and in particular Volgograd are all so beautiful and different. People were friendly and helpful, and there were almost to many things to see.
Ukriane was also amazing. From Kievs golden chuch-towers til Lvivs European charm. The country offers such diversity. And Lviv is really a city equal to Prague as far as atmosphere and beauty goes.
Japan
Not fair to say I visited it exactly, But I came to Japan to visit and ended up marrying a local and staying. Four years on I have say this has got to be the most civilized country to live in.
The Japanese are just so polite, You never stop learning new things about the country. I live on a small island way down off the south coast but i travel and visit different parts of the country whenever I can and im always treated like a visiting VIP. They also give me extra Brownie points for being English which always makes me laugh to myself.
A lot of them have this image of the old style English gentleman and don`t seem to know much about the beer gutted drunken Brits who invade so many countries. I think that was helped by the UK police coming out here for the world cup and doing a great job expelling the trouble makers at the emigration as they got off the Planes.
If you come here as a backpacker it can be very cheap to live using guesthouses and food is much cheaper than the UK.
The police are very fare and there is no corruption which you get in a lot of asian countries.
The scenery is great and you can find some really unique places to vist
O

SPAIN
It may be true that some places are just unique on certain aspects of a country but a country as a whole must be the only way to classify it as such....and I have to say that Spain is on a whole a 'complete' country, one of the most diverse from the world...different languages, lanscapes, cultures, history, etc from unknown north (green, sandy beaches, cristaline waters, seafoos, celtic culture) to south (sun, sangria, paella, flamenco and all that steoretypes...)
Ole!
Malawi
The tourist office call Malawi the warm heart of Africa - this is very apt as this is one of the friendliest places I've been. There's not a lot to do there, and the country is very poor, but it's very relaxed and an easy introduction to Africa. I spent three weeks there working and loved it.
Also Portugal - away from the Algarve. The north of the country has it all, beaches, mountains, valleys, and great wine at decent prices.
Portugal: Madeira
I don't have to divide my choice into best scenery, best... etc. This one little Island had all I need for me.
Madeira is by far the most beautiful place I have seen.
"If you don't know where you are going, you will wind up somewhere else!" Yogi Bear
New Zealand and Portugal
I'm from New Zealand, and absolutely overwhelmed by the positive response to it. I knew it was widely regarded as a wonderful place to visit, but to have SO many well travelled people rank it as NUMBER ONE...wow!
I'm heading back there in about a months time after having spent the last year travelling. I have to say i'm quite sad and nervous about this, but all you kind comments about my lovely wee country have made me feel more warmly about my homecoming.
And doesn't it have a great cafe culture?
For the record, my favourite countries portugal. beautiful tiles everywhere, moorish influence.
Has anyone been to Sintra?
Sintra
Sintra is gorgeous - fairy tale castles, beautiful woods, and misty valleys - a wonderful place and actually very easy to visit for the day from Lisbon. Byron called Sintra 'glorious Eden' -he wasn't far off in my view.

So many hidden treasures in this paradise. The politics have gotten better and it is a safe place to visit. You will love it! Especially Santander!
Best Country
India by far. It may take a bit of getting used to but it is the epitome of the diversity life on this planet.
I think New Zealand now really sucks. It has been destroyed by mass tourism especially Wanaka and Queenstown. Dont go there ...please!
Burma (Myanmar)
My favourite country would probably have to be Burma. It has stunning religious sites, extremely friendly people, surprisingly good food, very low prices, and, unlike the rest of Southeast Asia, is not overrun by annoying backpackers.
Re: Best at gratuitously invading smaller countries - USA.
I had to rub my eyes then read that again. Let me see if I have this straight: You're from the UK and you're saying the US is "Best at gratuitously invading smaller countries"???
I'm afraid that's one area of expertise where the US trails miserably behind Europe, and always will even if the war-profiteering Bush family elects itself as the US monarchy! Now there's a frightening thought.
