At what point does a healthy love of travel become a obsessive compulsive disorder??

I'm starting to get a little worried about myself.  Wink

I'm going to Switzerland for almost the sole purpose to get Liechtenstein ticked off off the list.   I went to Andorra last year for god's sake (to be fair the drive over Pasa De La Casa was awesome).  Even though I was in Estonia for just 2 days, I considered using one of them for a daytrip to Helsinki.  When considering Romania for a future trip, I think to myself "how can I get Moldova and Transnistria added to the trip?".

When planning for travel in the future I always look at my map and think "we haven't I been".

Also, I'm currently looking to go to Uzbekistan and Kygrzstan in 2009, and will do a particular tour because it also goes to Tajikistan (woohoo!).  And another bonus, is that it finishes on the Thursday which gives the opportunity for a weekend in Almaty, Kazakhstan.  Bonus!

At what point does a healthy love of travel become a obsessive compulsive disorder?

What have you ever done to get a country 'ticked off' which borders on the ridiculous?

Fellow OCD Sufferer

I can sympathise...I have spent many an hour on a train/bus/pick-up truck in order to "tick off" a nearby country, which invariably always looks a lot closer on a map than it actually is.  This is how, in my case, a week-long trip to Estonia turned into a dash through Poland, Russia (Kaliningrad), Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland...because they were all so close....

One time I foolishly listened to someone more "sensible" and decided to stay another day in Argentina rather than get a ferry across to Uruguay for the day.  The result is that I have a very silly grey blob on my otherwise red map of South America and have regretted it ever since.

So even if this is an obssessive compulsive disorder and attracts scorn from those who want to "get to know a country properly", I really don't care...because it's fun.

Tick tick tick

Going to Argentina to start Antarctica cruise. Leaving early from UK so I can 'do' Uruguay. Had a brain wave can I 'get' Brazil in as well. I can go to Sao Paulo on plane with a change in Montevideo. Brilliant. Even better still, on the way back to Buenos Aires I've got to change planes in Ascuncion, Paraguay. A bonus or what. Total for the round trip GBP158. 3 extra ticks. It is becoming an obsession.

Me too on Uruguay.  Not

Me too on Uruguay.  Not that I mind going back to Argentina again.

Last year I had half a day to spare in Barbados.  Instead of spending it on the beach I did a mad dash through St Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, and Grenada.

also

I guess when you list all your flight/countries/etc not just on passportstamp but also flightmemory and all the various facebook applications too.

The madness

Me to, I laughed when I saw these posts and I am ashamed to admit it as well. The Uruguay bit got me as well, we couldn't get a ferry on the only free day we had when we were in Argentina and it is going to eat me up inside, that I didn't manage to tick this one off, as the rest of South America is in a nice shade of red.

I've also taken time off work to travel and have managed to cover 20 countries in the last 6 months- but the flights have been a killer.

It's good to know that I am not alone in having this BUG.

What should be the rules for adding a new country?

Well, I'm not quite so mercenary, but i will admit to hiring a kayak in Namibia and paddling across the Kunene River so I could set foot on Angolan soil and thus colour in a whole other country. (Exactly where are all those landmines btw?)

Obviously didn't go through customs, so my question would be, what actually constitutes 'another country'? Setting foot on the soil? (not an airport). Or passing through Immigration? (Obviously with the EU, can't actually use an actual 'passportstamp' as the criterium now).

Cheers PJ

You know what guys, there are worse things in life. Travelling is alot of fun, educational. Atleast you arent stuck on the couch with a bag of chips and a remote in your hands day in and day out. People that dont like to travel are small minded and annoying. Trust me you dont wanna run into one of them. I say you go for it. This is almost like a competition. I look at the places that other folks have been to that I havent been able to visit but would like to. It gives me an adrenaline rush sort of. It keeps me focused on the goal of one day making it. You are all fine just keep on keepin on

Adding a country

I would like to say atleast a minimum of two hours in any city of that particular country with the exception of Airports. Simply because you dont see anything at the Airport and also, if you do a bus tour of a certain city then do a little walking around for a little bit, you normally have a gist of things, the history and what not.
